Adeleke: I will defend people’s mandate

Senator Ademola Adeleke, the winner of the governorship election held on July 16 in Osun State, has stated his willingness to defend his election victory before the Election Petitions Tribunal.

The All Progressives Congress’ flag bearer in the election, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, went before the tribunal on Friday to contest Adeleke’s victory.

Adeleke, however, asserted that his election victory was entirely in accordance with the law and the wishes of the electorate.

This was said in a statement released by Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke’s spokeswoman, on Saturday in Osogbo under the title: “I’ll Defend and Retain My Victory – Osun Governor-Elect.”

Adeleke further said that the election of July 16 was transparent, guaranteeing that the people’s freely given mandate to him will be upheld and validated.

He also urged his followers to maintain their composure, saying that the Peoples Democratic Party’s legal team was responding appropriately to the petition filed to contest his victory.

“I implore the decent people of Osun State to maintain their composure after voting overwhelmingly against terrible government. We are taking the necessary steps to uphold their authority. Given that this election is internationally recognized as a significant improvement in electoral transparency and integrity, we will take all reasonable steps to ensure that the court upholds our victory.

“We also want to reaffirm our belief in the legal system as a bulwark of justice and optimism. We firmly believe that God will use this election petition to grant us and the tenacious people of Osun State another another historic win.

Osun All Progressives Congress, meanwhile, had stated that it anticipated Adeleke to collect the best class of attorneys who would defend him against serious claims made against his victory in the most recent governorship election before the tribunal.

In a statement, Kola Olabisi, the Osun APC chairman’s media adviser, claimed that instead of doing that, Adeleke had established a transition committee.

Olabisi stated, “In general, my opinion is that Mr. Governor-elect is putting the cart before the horse with his hurried inauguration of the transition committee.

“Is it the creation of a transition committee that should be his primary focus when he is expected to be assembling the best crop of attorneys who would defend some of the serious accusations made against his pyrrhic victory in all the constitutionally permitted courts to adjudicate over his victory?”
