APC Muslim youths reject Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate

The Muslim youth wing of All Progressives Congress (APC) Muslim youths have rejected the decision made by the chieftains of All Progressives Congress (APC) to pick Senator Kashim Shettima as the running mate to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming presidential election that will take place in 2023.

The Muslim youth wing are making a plea to Tinubu to remove Shettima who happen to be the former governor of Borno and replace it with a political leader from the North who is a Christian so that this can boost the chance of their party in retaining the seat of Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday evening in Abuja, the leader of the Muslim Youth wing of All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Saleh, said they were passionately about the party because of this they are totally against Muslim-Muslim tickets so they reject the decision of the party concerning the running mate of Bola Ahmed Tinubu who happen to be Muslim.

According to Saleh, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had the rights to make the decision in choosing his running mates, but the decision should be a collective effort of everyone in the party. His decision should align with the collective sensibilities of the people.

He declared, “As concerned APC stakeholders in the 19 Northern States of the nation, we find it troubling that such a decision could be made without consideration of its implications on the party’s election prospects and the ensuing outcry such a move could cause in the nation. “It is also concerning that only the APC offered a Muslim-Muslim ticket out of all the political parties in the nation. This, in our view, is callous and a blatant demonstration of disrespect for our Christian brothers and sisters.

Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC presidential candidate, is a Muslim from South West Nigeria; therefore, choosing a Muslim from the north of the country to be his running mate is unethical from both a political and moral standpoint. We are adamant that such a move could have unfavorable repercussions for the APC at the general elections, thus the party’s leadership must move quickly to fix this error of judgment, he continued.

Saleh claimed that there are respectable candidates in Northern Nigeria with extensive backgrounds and broad grassroots support who might support the APC’s presidential nominee in the upcoming presidential elections.

“As a result, the Northern Muslims Forum of the 19 APC states views the choice of Senator Kashim Shettima as an anomaly that should be rectified as soon as possible by the appropriate party officials.

The consequences of inaction in this matter are so severe that the majority of eligible voters in Northern Nigeria have chosen to boycott the APC in protest at the treatment of Northern Christians, whose population and importance to the region’s overall development cannot be overstated. We as a group would like to categorically express that we disagree with the APC’s selection of Senator Kashim Shettima as its vice presidential candidate.

“This choice is based on the requirement to maintain equality in the APC’s presidential ticket, as has been the case since democracy was restored in 1999. “The APC must respect the nation’s religious plurality. We believe that prior to the elections, priority should be given to ensuring a united house rather than a fragmented house.

Therefore, the Muslim youth wing of All Progressives Congress urged President Muhammadu Buhari and Tinubu to choose a Christian as the APC’s vice presidential candidate in place of the current nominee.

“The APC must go back and pick a Christian priest as its vice presidential candidate if it hopes to have electoral success in the 2023 presidential elections. The party must avoid giving the impression that it is advancing a religious agenda by running a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

The Northern Muslim Forum of the 19 APC States opposes the action in its entirety because it will only serve to reinforce mutual mistrust between Muslims and Christians in the nation, which won’t bode well for the country’s general peace and tranquility.

“Therefore, we reject the APC’s proposal for a Muslim-Muslim ticket. We respectfully request that President Muhammadu Buhari step in to prevent the party from facing an electoral catastrophe. We kindly request that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu choose his running mate in the same manner President Muhammadu Buhari choose his running mate for the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections.

The national interest is the fulcrum of this position. The APC must not be perceived as a party that is insensitive to religion, since our Christian brothers and sisters deserve a place in the grand scheme of things. “Now is the time to act,” he remarked.
