Atiku finally meets Wike in Abuja

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, and Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, have finally met after considerable anticipation.

On Thursday, August 4, 2022, the two PDP leaders met in Professor Jerry Gana’s Abuja home, according to Daily Trust.

Why is this important? Because Atiku, a former Vice President, and Wike have been engaged in a protracted conflict going all the way back to the PDP presidential primary.

Atiku boasted that no one can stop him from winning the party’s presidential nomination while speaking to journalists during his visit to his former boss, Olusegun Obasanjo, back in February. Wike took offense to the statement and called it a disregard for the party’s delegates.

In the meantime, their animosity intensified as Atiku defeated Wike to win the PDP presidential nomination and continued to choose Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate in spite of a committee recommendation in favor of the Rivers Governor.

Rumors of a defection: Wike did not like the former vice president’s move, which led to a deadlock within the PDP.

Soon after, the governor was spotted publicly mingling with opposition party politicians, which led to speculation that he may be planning to leave the PDP.

However, the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) met in response to the dispute between Atiku and Wike and decided to work toward a resolution.

The BoT finally convened on August 3, 2022, a Wednesday.

After the committee meeting on Wednesday, Senator Abdul Ningi, the acting secretary, informed reporters that the members of the BoT would work to end the conflict so that the party could enter the upcoming elections with an unified house.

Atiku and Wike meet: A source who talked with Daily Trust claims that the two met on Thursday for more than an hour and decided to put their differences aside and cooperate.

The source went on to say that they concur to form a small committee to determine the areas in which Wike and Atiku’s camps may cooperate.
