Ballon d’Or: Oshoala misses out on final list

After UEFA announced Beth Mead, Lena Oberdorf, and Alexia Putellas as the top three finalists for the 2022 UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award, Asisat Oshoala of the Super Falcons and Barcelona lost out on the prestigious Ballon d’Or trophy.

Following the announcement of the 20-woman shortlist for the 2022 Women’s Ballon d’Or last week, Oshoala became the first African woman to win the award.

In order to win the CAF Women’s Player of the Year award for a record-breaking fifth time last month, the Barcelona Femini player defeated her countrywoman Perpetua Nkwocha’s four nominations.

The winner, who was born in Lagos, is the first person from Africa,  female, to have won the award so regularly.

Oshoala had limited playing time due to injury last season, but she was still at her best. When she was on the field, she constantly delivered, helping Barca win the domestic league title.

Super Falcons, the star forward for Barcelona Femeni, tied Geyse Ferreira of Madrid CFF for the league lead with 20 goals in 19 games last season despite missing about seven weeks due to injury.

She was the first African woman to get the Pichichi award for her achievements.

The Nigerian striker, who first rose to prominence in 2014, had a tremendous year as she guided her country’s U-20 women’s team to the U-20 Women’s World Cup final in Canada against Germany.

Despite the fact that Lyon defeated Barca in the Women’s Champions League final.

The Falcons striker was not on the final list, which was reduced to just three names before the award ceremony in Istanbul the following week.

Mead, an attacking midfielder for Arsenal, is recognized for her outstanding performance at the Women’s Euros, where she helped England win on home soil by setting the scoring record and earning Player of the Tournament honors.

After leading Germany to another final, Oberdorf, who also contributed significantly to Wolfsburg winning the domestic double last season, was awarded the Young Player of the Tournament.

Due to an injury, Spain’s star Putellas was unable to compete, but the 34 goals she scored for Barcelona in their stunning triumph over Spain in 2021–2022 helped the 2021 Ballon d’Or Feminin champion have her most fruitful club season.
