The husband, according to his wife, left her and their children at the robbers’ mercy when they attacked the couple in their marital home.

No longer interested in getting married, Asiata Oladejo. After being ambushed by armed robbers at their home, her husband Abidemi locked himself in the bathroom.

In her testimony before a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, Oladejo said that because her husband is unreliable, he abandoned her and their children as they were being attacked by thieves.

“My Lord,” she said, “I’m still reeling from the horror I felt when a group of robbers broke into our home. He ducked into the bathroom, leaving me to pant in front of the armed robbers who were terrorizing the entire family.

“My lord, that night when the robbers came at about one in the morning, my husband was not there to protect the kids and I. I didn’t know he was in the toilet. Only after they had left did he emerge. The house was where my husband and I wanted to stay.

After hearing the woman’s case, the court’s president, S. M. Akintayo, issued a restraining order against Oladejo, which she insisted had to prevent the latter from making threats against, harassing, or meddling in Abidemi’s private life.

The judge went on to award Oladejo custody of the couple’s three children as well, stating that she is best suited to care for them. The children’s welfare, including their education, is the responsibility of both the petitioner and the respondent.

“Abidemi should also pay a monthly feeding allowance of N20,000 for the maintenance of the children,” she continued. However, the judge instructed Abidemi and Oladejo to preserve the peace and order.
