Pastor stages his own kidnap twice to collect ransom from church members

Albarka Bitrus, a pastor from Jos, was detained by Plateau State Police Command agents for staging his own kidnap and extorting money from his followers.

Alabo Alfred, the command’s spokesman, revealed this in a statement on Wednesday. He stated that the pastor and his accomplices were detained as a result of intelligence reports after churchgoers paid an N600,000 ransom to free the preacher.

“The Plateau State Police Command has again exposed the malicious deed of one pastor Albarka Bitrus Sukuya’m’ of Jenta Apata, Jos who on several occasions faked his kidnapping with his associates and received ransom from sympathetic members of his congregation,” said the statement.

Following his fictitious kidnaps on November 14th, 2022, and November 30th, 2022, where ransom payments of N400,000 and N200,000 were made by his supporters in exchange for his release, the episodes raised suspicion.

The DPO of Nassarawa Gwong Police Station, CSP Musa Hassan, invited the cleric based on reliable intelligence, and the investigation got started right away. It was discovered during the course of the inquiry that the suspect had been planning with his gang to stage his kidnapping and fraudulently demand ransom.

 

The suspect admitted to the crime during questioning and named the following people as his accomplices: (1) Baruk Mailale, (2) Nathaniel Bitrus, both men from Yelwan Zangam village in Jos-north, and (3) Aye (surname not yet known), a man from Jalingo, Taraba State.

“The suspect further disclosed that on April 1, 2022, he set fire to two motor vehicles (a Mercedes Benz and a Toyota) and a bicycle that belonged to his coworkers at the ECWA Bishara 3 Jenta Apata premises, where he claimed one of them hated him, referring to his senior pastor. “However, police operatives of Nassarawa Gwong Division, Jos-north LGA arrested two (2) of the suspects, namely,
