The United States kills Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri in a drone attack.

President Joe Biden said from the White House on Monday that a drone attack killed Ayman al-Zawahiri, the head of al Qaeda. Biden said, “I approved a precise attack to eliminate him from the battlefield permanently.”

Zawahiri, who recently turned 71, had continued to be a major international icon of the group 11 years after the US killed Osama bin Laden. He once worked as bin Laden’s personal doctor.

Zawahiri was killed in what a senior administration source described as “a precision tailored airstrike” using two Hellfire missiles while seeking refuge in central Kabul to reunite with his family, according to Biden. According to the official on Monday, Biden ordered the drone hit, which was carried out at 9:48 p.m. ET on Saturday, after many meetings with his cabinet and important advisers. No American personnel were present in Kabul at the time of the strike.

Principal Haqqani The Taliban took action to hide Zawahiri’s presence after Saturday’s successful strike, restricting access to the safe house and hurriedly relocating members of his family, including his daughter and her children, who were purposefully not targeted during the strike and remained unharmed. The official claimed that Zawahiri’s presence in the region was in “clear violation of the Doha agreement” and that Taliban figures were aware of it. Before the attack on Saturday, the US did not inform Taliban leaders.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, stated in a string of tweets that “an air attack was carried out on a private house in Sherpur neighborhood of Kabul city on July 31.”

The Islamic Emirate’s security and intelligence agencies looked into the incident since “the nature of the incident was not evident at first,” he claimed, but “initial results showed that the hit was carried out by an American drone.”

Before CNN reported Zawahiri’s death, Mujahid posted the tweets. The Doha Agreement and international norms were clearly violated, according to Mujahid, who stated that the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan “strongly condemns this aggression on whatever pretext.”

The delivery of justice

As he remained confined with a rebound case of Covid-19, Biden was kept informed about the action against Zawahiri. On Monday, he delivered an outside speech from the White House’s Blue Room Balcony.

Biden stated that Zawahiri “was one of the people most accountable for the assaults that killed 2,977 people on American soil and was heavily involved in the planning of 9/11. He directed assaults on Americans for many years.”

“Now that justice has been served, this terrorist commander has been eliminated. People no longer need to be afraid of the ruthless and determined killer, “He went on. “The United States continues to show its willingness and ability to protect its citizens from those who would attack them. We reiterate tonight that if you pose a threat to our citizens, the United States will find you and eliminate you, regardless of how long it takes or where you hide.”

The President said that the nation’s intelligence community’s “exceptional persistence and expertise” were responsible for the precision strike targeting.

” Zawahiri moved to downtown Kabul to rejoin with his immediate family, according to our intelligence community’s earlier this year discovery of him, Biden added. The attack comes a year after Biden gave the order to remove US forces from Afghanistan, which allowed the Taliban to quickly capture power there.

The US no longer required thousands of boots on the ground in Afghanistan after 20 years of war, according to Vice President Joe Biden, who made the announcement on Monday. “I made a promise to the American people that we would continue to conduct effective counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan and beyond,” Biden added. We’ve already done that.

Because Zawahiri is no longer alive and we’re going to make sure that nothing else occurs, Biden promised that Zawahiri “will never again allow Afghanistan to become a terrorist safe haven.”

Finally, the President thanked the US intelligence and counterterrorism communities and expressed his thanks, adding that he hoped Zawahiri’s demise would provide some solace for the friends and families of the 9/11 victims.

He said, “To those who still wish to damage the United States, hear me now: We will always be watchful and we will act — and we will always do what is necessary to preserve the safety and security of Americans both at home and abroad.
